2010 France’s wines Great Guide
Philippe Gilbert is a winemaker of integrity. For the last few years, he has worked the vineyard in the most natural way possible, with a talented technical manager : Jean-Philippe Louis. His methods reflect on the production with the last three vintages being of an exemplary hold. The whites have increased in minerality and maturity, the reds in intensity and aromatic pureness. Since 1999, the old vines have been developed to obtain the cuvee Les Renardières that produces fatter whites with a beautiful edge and reds with a more complex material. Here comes a domain that leans towards the top of the appellation. The 2008 vintage confirms the hopes pinned on this domain that has improved again.
-

-
Menetou-Salon 2008 Red Marked by black cherry overtones, this 2008 vintage is already a gourmet wine. Its supple and fruity tannins are of excellent length in the mouth and delightfully crunchy. 15/20

The domaine Philippe Gilbert
(…) After having practised organic farming, this year they are starting to convert the Domaine to biodynamics. Menetou-Salon Renardières Rouge 2005, made from the oldest vines, is robust, with plenty of material and tannins, with red fruit and woodland aromas, with very good ageing. Excellent Menetou-Salon White 2006, from the sauvignon, very balanced, aromatic and persistent, very dry and complex in the mouth, combining structure and finesse, which I liked very much. The cuvée Les Renardières White 2005 is a tasty wine that mixes fresh fruits, walnuts and a fine finish. No hesitation.

The domaine Philippe Gilbert
Menetou-Salon White 2005 * Philippe Gilbert and his oenologist Jean-Philippe Louis make a great team on this property founded in 1768. From the very first smell, this wine’s aromas of citrus and exotic fruits are firmly present. The impression left by the attack is one of suppleness; then an edge that is not completely without fat comes to the fore, giving good tone. Seafood will suit it perfectly. The cuvées Les Renardières White 2004 and Les Renardières Red 2004 are both quoted.

Domaine Philippe Gilbert - Menetou-Salon
Philippe Gilbert is a winemaker of integrity. For the last few years, he has worked the vineyard in the most natural way possible, which the quality of his wines echoes, notably the 2006 vintage with an exemplary hold. Since 1999, the old vines have been developed to obtain the cuvée Les Renardières, producing fatter whites with a beautiful edge and reds with a more complex material. This cuvée is well-balanced as regards citrus aromas and iodine shades.
-
Menetou-Salon Les Renardières
Red 2006 15.5/20
Well put together, this cuvée has a strong body. It is necessary to allow between two and four years to bring out the best of a partridge. It is advisable to pour it in a carafe at least two hours before serving.

Menetou-Salon Les Renardières
White 2006 16.5/20
This wine has body, with overtones of citrus and iodine shades. It can bring out the best of a fresh cod escorted by an emulsion of mango.

Domaine Philippe Gilbert
Menetou-Salon
This domain has been committed in organic farming and biodynamics since 2005. A pretty risky bet indeed for a vineyard situated in the Cher region, in the northern half of France. Philippe Gilbert has been advised by Jean-Philippe Louis, oenologist, since the quality boost given to the domain ten years ago.
The cuvée Les Renardières, from the oldest pinot noir and sauvignon vines, is partly made into wine and grown in new barrels of neighbouring origin, as indicate their Tronçais or Never stamps. The whites have gained in breath and iodine length since the last vintages. After an intense woody period, the reds are becoming more assertive, increasing in finesse without decreasing in maturity
The wines:
The sound maturity of the 2007 vintage stands out from the fleshy and flavoursome cuvée Domaine, which is the best expression of the appellation.
Les Renardières is increasing in finesse, minerality, with deep overtones of kumquat and bergamot orange. An excellent length in the mouth. The White 2006 is looser, without lacking of breath in the mouth. The Domaine Red 2007 has brilliant fruit overtones gracefully tingling on a dense material. In the mouth, les Renardières Red unfolds beautifully with overtones of liquorice and a subtle woodiness. Drink without delay.

Domaine Philippe Gilbert
Very good domain in biodynamics. Descendant of a winemaker lineage since 1768, Philippe Gilbert took over the management of the Domaine in 1998. With the oenologist Jean-Philippe Louis, he put a lot in the work in the vines and cellar, setting up the tools necessary to produce high-quality wines. To be fully in accord with his convictions, he now runs the vineyard in compliance with organic farming requirements (he has even been a member of the Byodivin Union since 2007). Unlike last year, the reds seem to gain body while remaining airy. The Renardières 2006 is rich in tannin, offering dense fruit overtones free from woodiness. A gourmet Domaine Red 2007, very pleasant. Watch this space. With the whites, Philippe Gilbert seeks minerality, like this 2007 vintage with its beautiful edge, whereas the Renardières 2006, in the same spirit, is richer with a light woodiness, bringing complexity.

Menetou-Salon rouge 2007 has pride of place.
Descendant of a winemaker lineage since 1768, Philippe Gilbert took over the management of the Domaine in 1998. With the oenologist Jean-Philippe Louis, he put a lot in the vines, setting up the necessary tools to produce high-quality wines. To be fully in accord with his convictions, Philippe Gilbert now cultivates the vineyard in biodynamics conditions. Is this the reason why his wines are “self-evident”, unpretentious and, above all, refreshing and natural ? The whites are mineral. Les Renardières is a tight and deep cuvee with tangy overtones and a beautiful fat. The reds are reminiscent of freshly squeezed fruit juices, just like the 2008 cuvee (strawberries, raspberries and grapes). Les Renardières is more complex and riper.

The wines: The whites 2008 are full of life and character and will have to be kept in the cellar for a few months or years (Les Renardières). The reds 2008, lively alike, reveals notes of crunchy, intense fruit. Well managed during the extraction process. Production keeps on differentiating, endowing Menetous with a certain thickness.

Les Renardières rouge 2006
Philippe Gilbert, well supported by the oenologist Jean-Philippe Louis, perpetuates a family tradition dating back 1768. Today run in compliance with organic farming and biodynamic requirements, the Domaine offers the best of its terroir as the winemaker gives a marvellous account of his know-how. With its deep purple robe, this 2006 cuvée bears the colour of a young wine. The bouquet is dominated by roasted and spicy overtones, with berryfruit scents (blackcurrant) perfectly melting with the woodiness. Rich and fleshy, the generous mouth reveals the firm presence of tannins balanced with a definite smoothness. Strength and concentration are the main assets to this beautiful Menetou-Salon which shall give the best of it within 3 to 5 years. The Red 2006 and the White 2007 are both quoted.

Red Menetou-Salon 2007
A good wine A delightful, ruby-coloured wine, with a bouquet exhaling overtones of red berries with floral, bracken and musk notes. A 100% pinot noir from old vines (25 years) cultivated on kimmeridgian marls. The mouth, delicate, unfolds a subtle material blending fruit overtone with gentle tannins and a nice freshness. Non-glued, non-filtered. Gourmet dish: Sancerre ham with a thick slice of toasted country-style bread
Menetou-Salon les Renardières Red 2007:
Very good wine A tasty Menetou. 100% pinot noir, grown in barrel (one year) and vat (11 months). This cuvee reveals an intense bouquet with overtones of fruits (soaked cherry, raspberry, blackberry), flowers, woodland, musk as well as smoky and spicy hints. The mouth, flavourful and tasty, is a perfect balance between fruit overtones, silky tannins and subtle acidity with a liquorice finish. Non-glued, non-filtered. Gourmet dish: Veal loin with leak and truffle juice.
Menetou-Salon White 2008
Exceptional wine – One of our favourites A magnificent wine. A superb expression of sauvignon. Adorned with a bright light yellow robe, the sharp, vigorous bouquet, 100% sauvignon from old vines (25 years), exhales intense and complex notes combining white and exotic fruits (pineapple) with fresh herb, mint, musk and a hint of minerality. The mouth, vigorous, linear and pure alike, is a perfect balance between tangy fruit, freshness and minerality. Just perfect. Gourmet dish: Fresh grey shrimps
Menetou-Salon les Renardières White 2007
Excellent wine. A Menetou with a dazzling personality. 100% sauvignon from old vines, grown in barrels (10 months) and vats (8 months). This cuvee, adorned with a light yellow robe and green-gold glints, reveals a sharp bouquet full of aromas that combines with harmony ripe white fruits (sloe, peach), and smoky, rice powder hints with a beautiful minerality. The mouth is ample, vigorous and combines fat, fruit, freshness and minerality. A nice and persistent finish. Non-filtered. Gourmet dish: Seafood salad with foie gras.
